Summary
Prepared for Shutdown?
Shutdowns and turnarounds are integral parts of every process
industries operation. Why are so few companies able to execute
shutdowns & turnarounds effectively and efficiently?
A well organised plant shutdown or turnaround can be likened to
a Formula 1 race. A perfect "pitstop", executed by a
professional and dedicated team of mechanics is a key success
factor. Saving valuable seconds in the pit makes or brakes the
Formula 1 champion.
The smooth running of a "pitstop" when a process plant goes into
shutdown or turnaround is however not always a guaranteed
success. It happens quite often that plants are scheduled to be
onstream by a certain date. In practice delays in plant start-up
of days or sometimes weeks is repeatedly seen throughout the
industry. Imagine the lost revenues of Euros 1.000.000./- a day
process plant!
Current estimates indicate that inefficient performed shutdowns
cost the European process industry Euro 100 million annually.
This figure is attributed to delays, excessively long time
schedules and high staffing cost etc. Much of the problem is
caused by poorly trained teams, who are not familiar with plant
and procedures as should be, along with operating companies
failing to build-up the necessary experience. Many companies
which used to have dedicated teams to shutdown and turnaround
plant have long since disbanded these teams and outsourced much
of this work to main or general contractors.
